IEP meeting question checklist

What to bring, what to ask, what to get in writing — and what to do before you sign anything.

For: Parents and carers · Free to print, copy and share · No sign-up

What questions should I ask at an IEP meeting?

Ask how each goal will be measured, who is responsible, how often it will be reviewed, and what happens if it isn't met. Ask for anything agreed verbally to be written into the document before you sign. You are allowed to take the paperwork away and read it first.

How to use it

  1. Print the checklist and fill in the top section before the meeting.
  2. Write your top three concerns down — meetings drift and it's easy to lose them.
  3. Work through the question list during the meeting and note the answers given.
  4. Ask for anything agreed out loud to be added to the written document.
  5. Do not sign in the room if you're unsure. Ask to take it home and read it.
  6. Send a short email afterwards summarising what was agreed, and keep the reply.
